Karen Foss joined KSDK NewsChannel 5 in 1979. She currently co-anchors NewsChannel 5’s newscasts at 5 p.m. with Kelly Jackson and 10 p.m. with Mike Bush. Karen’s dedication and professionalism have earned her numerous local Emmy nominations and awards. The Emmys have recognized both her work as a news anchor and as host of various special productions. Karen’s professional assignments have included reporting on four presidential nominating conventions; covering special news assignments; and producing a variety of multi-part series on timely topics. Issues Karen has tackled in past series include teen-age illiteracy, tobacco use, the high cost of political campaigns, crime victims and their frustrations, the problems of juvenile crime, and one woman’s desperate search for her missing children. Karen’s work on these issues and other special reports has also earned her local Emmy Awards.
The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis named Karen “Media Person of the Year” in 1995. She has also won the Riverfront Times Readership poll as “Best Anchor in St. Louis” the past 11 years; an honor she says “is better than an Emmy.” In addition, the St. Louis Journalism Review has named Karen as “Best Anchor” for the past five years. In 1983, Karen received the “Paraquad Service Award.” She was the first recipient of the Saint Louis Ambassadors’ “Spirit of St. Louis” award in 1985. The St. Louis Suburban Journals named her a “Woman of Achievement” in 1989. Also, in 1989, the YWCA honored Karen with the “Special Leadership Award” for her longstanding volunteer commitment to improving the lives of the disabled and youth in St. Louis. In 1992, the St. Louis Chapter of the NAACP honored Karen when she became the first television reporter to receive the “Roy Wilkins Freedom Award.” Karen’s other awards include the Lutheran Family and Children’s Services “Faith In Action” award in 1993. She also received the Boys Hope-Girls Hope “Father Paul Reinert Award for Service to Children and Youth” and the Missouri Press Women’s “Quest Award” in 1994. Karen is a native of Kansas City, Kansas and a 1976 communications honor graduate of the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Karen is married and resides in Clayton.
