Our chapter has created a non-profit foundation, the NATAS Mid-America Foundation, to raise money to award more substantial scholarships to college students studying for a career in media. The foundation is the charitable arm of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS)-Mid-America Chapter, Inc. and is a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations to the foundation are tax deductible under IRS rules.
The mission of NATAS Mid-America Foundation is:
to keep the scholarship awards adequate to keep up with the growing cost of education
provide scholarships to qualified high school senior and college students pursuing a career in journalism, broadcast television, television production and communications
pursue scholarship endowments
The foundation currently offers the annual Walter Cronkite Scholarship, named for the eminent journalist known by many as “the most trusted man in America.” Each year the chapter awards several additional scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. The NATAS Mid-America Foundation would like to increase the dollar amount for scholarship and offer additional scholarships.
The foundation encourages you or your business to donate or sponsor a scholarship for Mid-America students. By doing so you will be part of a select group helping ensure the future of media. Honor the life or memory of loved ones by endowing scholarships in their name. Earmark the scholarship for a particular area (e.g. meteorology reporting, investigating reporting) or assist under-represented students in specific areas of study.
Scholarships make a difference. Past Mid-America Walter Cronkite Scholarship recipients are making their mark in stations and companies across the country. Many have gone on to win regional EMMY awards for reporting.
Please meet some past scholarship recipients here.
