Micheal Mahoney started at Kansas City’s KMBC TV in February of 1980. But Michael actually got started in television at the age of fourteen, working for a local cable television operator in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Later came a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and stops in newsrooms in Iowa and North Carolina, before arriving in Kansas City. In 1981, Micheal received the National Headliners Award for coverage of the Hyatt Regency Skywalks disaster. He was the only reporter present at the moment the Hyatt Skywalks fell down, killing over 100 people. He did both the local and national reporting on the disaster.
Other awards include a 1993 EMMY for Spot News Coverage of the 1993 flood. His true love is government and politics. As KMBC’s political reporter, Micheal has covered every major political campaign in Kansas and Missouri since 1982, including the National Political Conventions and Campaigns. His blackberry contact list is a virtual “Who’s Who of Midwest Politcs”. Former Attorney General John Ashcroft may have summed it up one day as he left the studio after an interview. He told the producer: “you know, Mahoney always asks tough questions….but he’s always fair”.
