Mike Shipley was named News Director for KSDK-TV, NewsChannel 5 in St. Louis in March of 2000 and helped lead the transition at KSDK from television station to a multi-media Information center. Shipley began working at KSDK in 1981 as the Nighttime Assignment Editor. He has also held the positions of Daytime Assignment Editor, Assignment Manager, News Operations Manager and Assistant News Director. In fifteen years as News Director, KSDK was among the top regional Emmy ® winning stations in the market and in 2013, was the recipient of the Emmy® Award for News Excellence. In 2008, Shipley was honored by the Missouri Professional Communicators with their Virginia Betts White Quest Award for high standards of ethics and excellence in the Communications professions.
Among his career highlights, Shipley cites his leadership of the six month, market-wide planning and coordination effort for the international TV Pool providing arrival-to-departure coverage of Pope John Paul II’s visit to St. Louis in January of 1999; his role as Executive Producer for KSDK’s Atlanta coverage of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Summer Games; organization of KSDK’s coverage of the St. Louis Rams’ 1999 Super Bowl appearance in Atlanta and subsequent victory parade in St. Louis; coordination of live, satellite coverage out of Denver for all Gannett TV stations following the shootings at Columbine, Colorado and the 2014 coverage of the Michael Brown shooting, investigation and findings. Shipley is a native of St. Louis. Prior to coming to KSDK, Shipley worked in radio in Jefferson City, Missouri, the state capital, where he was named News Director in 1974.
