Matthew Beckwith is a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he is studying atmospheric science and journalism. He hopes to use his education to become a broadcast meteorologist.
When Beckwith was a child, he was terrified by even the thought of storms. In order to calm his fears, he started to learn about weather and has been in love with it ever since.
Beckwith is currently the weather director for 102.7 The Hog, a local radio station in Excelsior Springs. In addition to his responsibilities at the radio station, he has run social media accounts dedicated to Kansas City weather for several years.
Beckwith is honored to receive a NATAS Mid-America scholarship. “It’s truly an honor, I cannot thank the scholarship committee enough for its contribution to my education,” said Beckwith. “I would also like to thank my high school Journalism teacher, Mrs. Christen Everett, for her support and recommendation in applying for this honor.”
Beckwith’s dream job is to one day return to Kansas City and work along side the people who have mentored him. “Lisa Teachman, Bryan Busby, Jesse Hawila, and so many more have mentored me along the way, and I couldn’t ask for better support.” Beckwith said. “In the meantime, I can truly say I can’t wait for the day when I can finally be called ‘Meteorologist Matthew Beckwith.'”
